Instrument and Electrical Systems Engineer

Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for an Instrument and Electrical Systems Engineer to join our team.

Our I&E Systems Engineer role is responsible for helping with the engineering design, fabrication support, installation, and project startup for industrial automation projects.

The I&E Systems Engineer is responsible for helping the E&I department with the specification and design of industrial control systems, PLC and HMI programming, E&I data sheets and other departmental deliverables, system function testing, as commissioning and start-up support.

This position reports directly to our E&I Engineering Manager.

Technical Capabilities for this role include:

  • Ability to produce Electrical Engineering calculations, analysis, component selection, and system designs for major industrial installations. Typical calculations may include instrument circuit resistance, fuse sizing, circuit amp ratings, heat dissipation, and enclosure ventilation requirements.
  • Knowledge of NEC with specific emphasis on Hazardous Area design (desirable, must be willing to learn on the job.)
  • Ability to produce or direct the production of:
    • PLC and Control Panel Schematics and Component Spacing Requirements
    • Calculate Control Panel Heat Loads
    • Calculate Conductor and Fuse Ratings
    • Conduit and Cable Schedules
  • Ability to produce design and purchase specifications for:
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
    • Battery Backup and Solar Power Panel, UPS Systems
    • Control System Server and Workstation Requirements
  • Ability to direct and check design / drafting department for the production of:
    • Panel Layout Drawings
    • Instrument Wiring Schematics
    • Motor Control Schematics
    • Instrument and Electrical Wiring Schematics
  • Knowledge of UL Industrial Control Panel fabrication standards for non-hazardous (UL 508A) and hazardous locations (UL 1203, 698A) (desirable, but must be willing to learn on the job.)
  • Ability to troubleshoot instruments, and control systems.
  • Ability to program PLC’s, HMI’s and DCS’s.
  • Ability to read and produce logic drawings, C&E Drawings and Control Narratives.

Skills Required

Qualifications for a successful candidate in this role include:

  • B.S. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Related Engineering Technology
  • Proficient with MS Office
  • AutoCad Proficiency is desirable
  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
