Traditional locally managed SCADA Servers and the supporting network infrastructure often require an initial capital investment exceeding $100,000 plus the ongoing expense for software and hardware upgrades, network management, and specialized tech support. For small and medium operators, such a significant investment is often not feasible within project budget constraints.
SCADA-as-a-Service offers an alternate technology with a completely different cost structure. Using cellular SCADA gateways coupled with existing or “off-the-shelf” control system hardware, SCADA-as-a-Service projects can shed the upfront capital costs and lower ongoing operating expenses without compromising service.
While not suitable for all projects, many operations can benefit from replacing private radio networks with commercial cellular networks owned and managed by major providers. Dual SIM cellular gateways offer redundancy that, when combined with a fault-tolerant control system, can provide uptime reliability that exceeds typical locally managed systems.

The Town Manager first approached PTI about upgrading their existing system that used a local 900 MHz network to monitor the town’s elevated storage, water plants, and ground storage tanks. The existing system used a windows based workstation running a common automation software package with a small web server that provided internet-based access for their operators. While the system worked well, the software and hardware were approaching a required upgrade.
The manager’s objective was to eliminate the risk of the existing system operating on a single PC with multiple points of failure and move their SCADA operations to a Cloud Hosted platform operating in a hardened data center managed by “others.”
SCADA-as-a-Service options were a perfect solution. The platform they chose provided the same or better Operator Interface screens, improved alarm notifications and reporting, and a vastly superior data visualization engine with capabilities to build and analyze data trends on the fly without the need to “program.”
