Our project teams have implemented traditional SCADA remote monitoring platforms and developed custom solutions for a broad range of clients. – From simple tablet-based systems using local wireless networks to alert your operators of alarm conditions when they are away from their desk but inside the fenceline; To interconnected multi-mode wireless, cellular, satellite, and internet-based systems accessible from down the block to across the country.

Our SCADA system experience includes 900 MHz and 5 GHz line of site terrestrial radio networks, interconnected with local fiber and copper connected local networks, satellite and cellular access, and failover redundant access points using both locally managed server systems and cloud-hosted SCADA-as-a-Service platforms.

Municipal Water District SCADA Upgrade

Our project to upgrade the remote monitoring capabilities of a Texas municipal water system to a modern SCADA platform came with its share of challenges. PTI and the town’s stakeholders understood the value of the existing water system assets. The project objective was to create a SCADA system foundation for new developments to accommodate the town’s rapid growth -without breaking the budget and unnecessarily replacing legacy hardware.

Our strategy was to implement a hybrid local control and SCADA monitoring system. We were able to keep most of the existing control system hardware and the existing 900 MHz radio assets and merge them with a modern Cloud-Hosted SCADA platform using cellular SCADA gateways.

The resulting system eliminated the single point of failure surrounding the legacy workstation-based automation software and replaced it with a cloud-hosted SCADA platform that, once implemented, requires little more than periodic user rights management. New projects in the town will utilize cellular SCADA gateways, while the town operators can upgrade their legacy equipment at their convenience.

SCADA Upgrade for Legacy Assets

This project in West Texas involved bringing together assets built by multiple operating companies, all using different hardware platforms and radio networks – Allen Bradley PLCs, ABB RTUs, Fisher ROCs, and OleumTech wireless meters all needed to talk to the same SCADA server. The system footprint exceeded a 10-mile radius, with end devices and gateways operating between a few hundred yards to several miles across multiple radio hops covering most of the county.

PTI designed and upgraded this SCADA system using a central server-based automation platform and data historian. We were able to preserve most of the legacy assets by repurposing the existing 900 MHz radios and augmenting them with new towers and communication gateways. The resulting system provides real-time web-based control access to their mobile operators as well as transmitting daily reports served by the data historian to the home office.
